As some of you know from Alan’s blog, last Sunday Sebastian, Alan and I took the train up to Vic for a bit of hiking.
What a day! We left Barcelona on the 9:22 train to Vic and our friends Pau & Mireia met us at the train station. We first met Pau & Mireia at Jackie & Sebastian’s place. Mireia is a PhD student who worked with Jackie at the research lab in Barcelona. Pau works as a contractor (sort of – they call it a “technical engineer” here) and, as a member of a hiking club up in Vic, he helps preserve the regions’ trails. They are a wonderful couple and some of the nicests & warmest people we have met here and the reason I get very deffensive when anyone says the Catalan are cold and unfriendly.
But I digress. Back to our hike. Pau had made reservations at a restaurant – Sanctuari de Cabrera – at a centuries’ old house on top of a mountain outside of Vic. It seems to be quite a local institution and families make a big outing out of hiking to the restaurant on the weekends. We drove part of the way and then hiked the last two hours to the restaurant. The place was obviously known only to locals. The owner freaked when Pau told her that we were from Canada & Brazil. It was the best trip we have done here. That’s what travelling is all about for me – going off the beaten track and connecting with the locals. And this weekend we got a taste of the real Catalunya…
Needless to say we had a wonderful time and will be going out with Pau and Mireia on another excursion soon… The question is: will it be the sleepy towns around the Pyrenees or the Costa Brava?

Vc já levou a sua filha ao parque de Collserola? Dá a impressão que vc está completamente fora da cidade e é tão pertinho!
Pois é… infelizmente a estadia aqui era temporária. Vim para fazer pesquisa pra minha tese e em maio estou voltando… Hehehe, meu marido vive tentando arrumar uma maneira da gente ficar pra sempre mas por enquanto não vai dar, tenho que voltar pra terminar o doutorado. Depois, só o destino dirá!

Lindo o lugar! Eu tb adoro buscar lugares pouco frequentados por turistas. Quando estou viajando eu tento “blend in” o maximo que posso.
So visitei Barcelona por uns dias ha muito tempo. Tenho uma amiga de la que agora mora na Holanda. Eu tb achei o pessoal da Catalunia super simpatico. Eu acho que tudo tem a ver com a maneira com a qual as pessoas (os turistas/visitantes) interagem com as pessoas locais. Eu ja ouvi muito isso tb (que sao frios, etc) sobre parisienses, mas a minha experiencia la foi totalmente diferente.

Oi Regina,
Eu também nunca tive problemas em Paris, que é a nossa cidade favorita. Batemos muito papo com garçons, donos de restaurante, guarda de museu, pessoas na rua, e todos foram super simpáticos. Aliás, eu concordo plenamente que tem tudo a ver com a forma como vc trata as pessoas. Mesmo se o garçon esteja estressado pq o companheiro dele não apareceu pra trabalhar e ele acabou de levar a maior bronca do gerente, um sorriso e uma piadinha chegam longe, viu? Andar com meu marido ajuda muito pois ele é um verdadeiro palhaço ;)
Aliás, a grande lição de vida que aprendi logo que cheguei no Canada foi essa – apesar das diferencas culturais e de idiomas, no fundo somos todos iguais. Todos queremos ser tratados com respeito, ter um teto sobre a cabeça e comida na mesa….
