When we left for Spain, we had to move all our furniture into a storage facility. We considered keeping our apartment in Toronto and subletting it but it was too much trouble to try to find someone we could trust and not have to worry about whether he/she paid the bills. So the answer was giving up our apartment, move everything into storage and getting a new place when we got back. Since the storage fees were calculated by volume, we sold some of the furniture that we didn’t really like before we left. There was no point in paying for something that we would eventually sell or throw out anyways… So we sold some bookcases, a futon, a desk, a bar unit, our tv… and we are now slowly trying to re-furnish our apartment. Some things changed functions – since we no longer have a TV, the TV stand became a bar unit – but other things weren’t so easy to adapt.
Today we finally bought a much-needed couch for our living room and some bookshelves. The bookshelves are quite ingenious; they are mounted to the wall and the books are piled upon it in such a way that the shelf itself becomes invisible, creating the effect of floating books. We had seen them for sale in Barcelona and I meant to go back to the store and buy a few before we left but never made it back to the store. Yesterday we saw them for sale at the gift shop of the Art Gallery of Ontario. I bought three and we put them up last night. I must say, I quite like the effect they create… Here are some pictures:
PS: the frame on the left side is awaiting until I can select some pictures from our year in Spain…
